Technologist - Design Narratives
I've developed a theory of design narratives that shows how system documentation can tell an engaging, captivating story. In a world where so much depends on computer systems, the consequences of communication failures in engineering design can be severe.
Stories are not just "this happened and then that happened." Nor are they just blobs of text with human characters grafted on. Stories are highly structured forms of communication; there is a whole field of study called narratology.
The Ariane 5 Rocket failure on June 4, 1996 was a consequence of misunderstanding design assumptions.
I haven't published as much about this as I would like, but you can read two papers presenting my ideas, one called Diagrams and Design Stories and the other called Features Need Stories.
